My Thoughts

This short story is part of The Alibis Collection, and as someone who enjoys a far-fetched Freida McFadden story (yes, my guilty pleasure), I was instantly intrigued. Give me Freida, a prison, an unreliable narrator, and a hint of “what really happened?” and I’m fully seated.

Despite its length, Death Row gives you plenty to sit with. It’s a true page-turner, especially if you enjoy stories that feel like peeling an onion, one tense, layered chapter at a time

What I Loved

It’s a fast-paced little story, I’m telling you, once you start, it’s hard to put down until you find out what really happened. I read it in exactly one hour while on the treadmill, so trust me, it’s the perfect way to kill (no pun intended hehehe) some time during your commute, gym session, or any quiet moment in your day.

What Surprised Me

I really liked the premise, it had great potential, and with a little more development, it could’ve gone even deeper. There were moments where I wished the story had more room to explore the characters or build tension just a bit longer. Still, for a short story, it delivers a solid punch and leaves you thinking.

Vibe Check

The vibe is moody, isolated, and claustrophobic, most of the story takes place inside a prison cell. It doesn’t rely on action; it focuses more on psychological tension.

About The Plot Twist

No spoilers, I promise! I’ll just say this: despite all the clues the story gives you, I never saw it coming, and that’s a really good thing. After reading so many books that rely on twists, you kinda start to predict them. But maybe I was too busy judging Talia to notice the clues along the way.

Conclusion

Death Row is a short story that does exactly what it needs to: it hooks you, holds you, and leaves you thinking in the end. If you’re in the mood for a morally layered psychological mystery this one is absolutely worth reading.

After Freida McFadden’s last book The Tenant, I have to admit I wasn’t expecting much from Death Row. But I was pleasantly surprised. Sure, it lacks a bit of depth and development, but overall, it’s a solid short read and a good dose of entertainment.

Talia’s Past: Jealousy, Regret, and a Plan Gone Wrong

Talia’s story with Noel starts off on a surprisingly unexpected connection. She meets him while working as a waitress, right after her boyfriend cheated on her. One day, she spits in a drink meant for the woman who “stole” Franklin her ex-boyfriend. Noel, the new guy at work, catches her, but instead of being shocked, he joins in and shows her how to really do it. That strange, weird, funny moment is how their relationship begins.

We learn that Noel Kemper broke his nose during a childhood peewee football game, which left it slightly crooked and caused him to lose his sense of smell entirely, meaning he couldn’t detect any odours at all.

Things move quickly from there. They fall in love and get engaged, but Talia’s insecurities begin to surface. When Noel forgets to book their dream wedding venue, they come up with a plan to steal someone else’s reservation by pretending to be that couple. It works, but the moment leaves Talia feeling uneasy, something about it doesn’t feel quite real. Eventually, they get married.

Later on, at a party they host, Talia spots Noel talking to a young woman named Arielle. Even though Noel insists it was just a friendly conversation, Talia can’t shake her jealousy. After that, little things start adding up, Noel working late more often, acting distant, and always smelling faintly of another woman’s perfume. When she finds a receipt for an expensive necklace, she’s convinced he’s having an affair.

That’s when she makes a terrible decision. Knowing their stove is faulty and that Noel can’t smell gas, she plans to leave food cooking while she goes out to dinner with her friend Kinsey, it’s meant to be her alibi. But during the dinner, she runs into Lisbeth Sharp, one of Noel’s colleagues, an older chemist who, it turns out, is the one wearing the mysterious perfume. Lisbeth also mentions that Noel left work early that day.

In a panic, Talia realizes she’s made a huge mistake. She rushes home, calling and messaging Noel the entire way. When he finally picks up, he’s fine. Noel avoids the gas leak thanks to a series of voicemails Talia leaves after realising she was wrong about him cheating. Unable to smell the gas himself, he follows her warnings, skips using the stove in favour of fast food, and calls the fire department, preventing a potential disaster.

The necklace, it turns out, was actually a gift for Talia.

She’s overwhelmed with guilt and relief. But while she’s still processing it all, she misses a stop sign. A truck crashes into her car, and everything fades to black.

Talia’s Present: Hope, Hallucinations, and the Truth

Talia Kemper sits on death row, accused of killing her husband, Noel, in a gas explosion. She insists she’s innocent and says she was out having dinner with her friend Kinsey when it happened. But none of that matters anymore, her final appeal failed, and the state scheduled her execution in just two weeks.

Talia spends her days alone in a cold, tiny prison cell.

The conditions are rough: bad food, barely any sleep, and the constant company of a bold rat she nicknames Pat. Vivid dreams and memories of life with Noel haunt her, sometimes they feel so real, she wakes up completely disoriented.

She keeps hearing a strange beeping, and every time she dreams of Noel, she wakes up just as they’re about to kiss, never quite reaching him. She often complains about a dry throat and struggles to swallow.

One day, her lawyer, Clarence Bowman, visits and breaks the bad news: she has no more legal options. The news crushes her. But then, something strange happens, she sees a man in the prison who looks exactly like Noel, broken nose and all. Shocked, she starts to believe Noel might still be alive. Rhea, the kind officer who often checks on her, says the man is Father Richard Decker, a chaplain, not Noel. But Talia doesn’t believe her.

As the execution date gets closer, she fixates on Father Decker. She’s sure he’s Noel and begs to speak with him. When they finally meet, she pleads with him to admit the truth, but he insists he isn’t Noel. Still, before leaving, he whispers, “I love you,” which only adds to her confusion, now she is sure that Noel is still alive.

On the day of the execution, everything feels surreal. She puts on the clothes Kinsey brought, lets Rhea gently brush her hair, and walks into the chamber. As the sedative kicks in, Talia hears Rhea and the executioner, Albert, quietly admit they know she didn’t kill Noel.

Then everything changes.

Talia is in a hospital, not a prison. She was never on death row. A car crash put her in a coma right after she learned Noel was alive. The prison, the guards, the entire death row experience, all of it unfolded in her unconscious mind. Clarence is actually Dr. Bowman, her physician. Rhea is her nurse. She can hear everyone speaking around her, but she isn’t able to come back.

Talia shows no signs of recovering. Her doctor reminds Noel of her medical directive, and urges him to make the heartbreaking decision to turn off her life support. The chaplain, a real man and not Noel in disguise, comes to give her last rites before they shut down the machines.

But even though he survived, Talia’s guilt over what she tried to do is what fuels the entire imagined prison storyline. Her jealousy, shaped by the pain of her dad cheating on her mum, pushed her to make a terrible decision. And yet, in the end, after ten years together, she finally feels how deeply Noel loved her.

Twist 2: Talia Is in a Coma, Not on Death Row

Here’s the big twist: Talia isn’t actually on death row, she’s in a hospital, in a coma after the car crash on her way home to stop Noel from lighting the stove.

Everything we see in the prison, the cell, Pat the Rat, even the execution, is all part of her subconscious. It’s her mind trying to make sense of what’s happening as her body starts shutting down. That beeping sound we keep hearing? It’s not a prison alarm, it’s a hospital ventilator. Clarence Bowman isn’t her lawyer, he’s her doctor. And Rhea, the kind guard, is really her nurse, gently brushing her hair and helping her through her final moments.

The “execution” scene is actually when the medical team turns off her ventilator, following her advanced directive. It all clicks into place, all those odd little details, suddenly make sense. Talia’s dreams are just memories, playing out in her coma.

And Father Decker? He’s not Noel in disguise, he’s just a chaplain doing his job. But Talia clings to the idea that it might be Noel because she’s desperate for forgiveness. The real Noel is actually by her hospital bed the whole time, holding her hand, begging her to wake up, completely heartbroken as the doctors turn off her life support.

Epilogue: A Dream of Redemption

Talia manages to avoid the car crash this time, overwhelmed with relief that Noel is safe. When she gets home, she finds Noel calmly reading on the porch. He tells her the fire department fixed the gas leak. A beeping fire alarm suddenly stops, easing Talia’s sore throat and making her feel strangely free. She finds it odd that Noel can’t hear the alarm.

The experience reminds her of a dreamlike moment during the near-crash, like her life was flashing before her eyes. Embracing Noel, she finally lets go of her jealousy and fully feels his love. They share a meaningful kiss, and Talia promises to appreciate their life together moving forward.

She is dead and free.

What does the ending of Death Row by Freida McFadden really mean?

The epilogue depicts Talia avoiding the car crash and reuniting with Noel, feeling “released.” However, Chapter 17 reveals that she is actually dying in a coma, with her ventilator being turned off. The epilogue represents a brief, peaceful moment in Talia’s mind, an imagined version of making it home safely to Noel. But the abrupt stop of the beeping suggests her death, marking her final moments as life support is withdrawn.

My Final Thoughts on Death Row by Freida McFadden

I have to say, this one really surprised me! I genuinely enjoyed the whole plot, and honestly, I didn’t see the coma twist coming, which, in my opinion, makes it even better.

Freida McFadden delivers exactly what you’d expect: a fast-paced, suspenseful, total page-turner. I flew through it in just an hour while walking on my treadmill! The story works so well, even as a short read. It explores guilt, forgiveness, and how we can get so caught up in our own suspicions that we miss what’s actually going on. And the fact that Talia only truly feels loved at the very end? Absolutely heartbreaking.

I will say the ending felt a little rushed, but overall, I went into Death Row with no expectations and ended up pleasantly surprised. Sure, there are a few far-fetched moments, but honestly, that’s kind of part of the Freida experience, isn’t it?

This was a solid, one-sitting read.

Blake Porter seems to have it all: a stable job as a VP at a New York marketing firm, a beautiful house, and a gorgeous fiancée named Krista, who’s all about home, amazing baked cookies and wedding plans. But his life unravels quickly when he’s fired for a leak he didn’t cause. Struggling financially, Blake and Krista rent out a room to Whitney Cross, a seemingly sweet waitress.

It gets its name from the brown sandstone used to build it, pretty popular back in the 1800s. These buildings usually have multiple floors and really detailed, decorative fronts. The stone itself is soft enough to carve, which is why so many brownstones have those charming old-school designs.

The story begins with Blake Porter, a vice president at a Manhattan marketing firm, driven by ambition. He’s worked hard to escape his humble Ohio roots, and the brownstone he now owns is his greatest achievement. But soon, strange things begin to happen. Odd noises, a foul smell… and just like that, Blake’s confidence starts to crack. He becomes suspicious of Whitney’s vague answers and secretive behaviour. His growing paranoia makes him look unhinged, he snaps at her, checks the house obsessively, and begins to seem unstable to those around him. Meanwhile, Whitney’s calm and collected demeanour only makes him question things more. Slowly, he even starts to doubt himself.

What the Heck is Lemonene and the Lipstick Incident

Blake starts feeling off, he develops a red, itchy rash that he can’t explain. Add that to the weird noises and the lingering bad smell in the house, and his paranoia just builds up. He’s also trying to stay presentable for his new job, but everything feels like it’s going wrong.

Then there’s the limonene. Limonene It’s a citrus-scented chemical often found in regular laundry detergent. Blake is allergic to it, which is why he only uses hypoallergenic products. But someone secretly swaps his detergent.

He begins watching Whitney closely, questioning her every move. To Krista, though, it just looks like Blake is spiralling. Then, to make matters worse, she finds lipstick on his shirt. Blake claims it’s Whitney’s, making it seem like he’s been cheating. But the damage is done, it’s one more crack in their already fragile relationship.

Goldie and a Fish Funeral (RIP Goldie)

Early in The Tenant we learn that Blake and Krista have a pet goldfish named Goldie. She might be small, but she means a lot to them, kind of like a little step toward building a life together. Goldie lives quietly in her bowl.

Then one day, Krista finds Goldie dead. She was fine before, so it’s a shock. Blake starts wondering if someone messed with the bowl, maybe Whitney put bleach in the water and killed Goldie? They hold a little fish funeral, but things only get weirder from there.

Whitney’s calm attitude and Blake’s growing anxiety make things tense. Krista thinks it was just bad luck, but Blake can’t let it go. That moment really changes the tone of everything, it’s when his doubts start to grow and take over.

A Lack of Trust and Krista Leaves the House

Krista has been watching Blake slowly unravel. He’s acting more paranoid every day, restless, suspicious, and constantly accusing Whitney of strange things. He even starts sleep-talking about her. Then things really start to worry Krista: she finds Blake’s phone in Whitney’s bed and a bottle of bleach hidden in their closet. Blake had been talking about bleach ever since Goldie died, so it feels like more than just a coincidence.

It all becomes too much. These red flags pile up, and Krista starts to feel unsafe in her own home. Her trust in Blake begins to crack. Needing space, she decides to stay with her friends Becky and Malcolm for a few days to clear her head. It’s not just one moment, it’s everything building up. Blake’s behaviour, the strange things happening around the house, the doubt. She leaves with a suitcase, not sure if she’ll even want to come back.

Who are Malcolm and Becky?

Becky is Krista’s best friend, loyal, supportive, and the kind of friend you have weekly dinner traditions with. She’s always been there for Krista, and when things start to spiral, Becky’s home becomes Krista’s safe place.

Malcolm is Becky’s husband, works at Coble & Roy, the same company where Blake used to be a VP before he was fired. That detail becomes important later on, when Blake discovers that Malcolm has actually been promoted to the very position he lost. It’s one more piece of the puzzle that starts to make everything feel even more suspicious.

Who is Mr. Zimmerly?

Mr. Zimmerly is Blake and Krista’s grumpy elderly neighbour. He’s always watching the street, complaining about little things like trash bins and the sidewalk, and generally being unpleasant, especially toward Blake.

One day, he and Blake have a loud argument outside over the bins. Blake, already under a lot of pressure, reacts badly, he loses his temper. Some neighbours see the fight, and it doesn’t reflect well on him.

Not long after, Mr. Zimmerly is found dead in his bathroom. Blake is the one who discovers the body. At first, it looks like an accident, maybe he slipped and hit his head. But the medical examiner later confirms it was blunt force trauma. He didn’t fall. He was murdered.

That’s when Detective Garrison steps in. With the recent public argument and Blake’s short temper, suspicion naturally falls on him. To make matters worse, it’s eventually revealed that the murder weapon was an antique clock from Blake and Krista’s apartment.

The First Plot Twist

After being accused of lying about a sick day and missing a key meeting, Blake is fired from his new temp job. His boss, Kenny, doesn’t give him a chance to explain and tells him not to come back.

This loss pushes Blake even further into paranoia. He feels like Whitney (the tenant) must be behind it all somehow, but he doesn’t yet understand why. Desperate for answers, he begins digging deeper into her background.

He finds out where she was born and attended high school, then uses the alias “John Sanders” to call her former school, Telmont High. The school secretary warns him that Whitney had a dark past, especially involving her high school boyfriend, Jordan Gallo, who died by suicide under very suspicious circumstances. She says Whitney was manipulative and possibly responsible for his downfall and death.

Blake eats some of the cookies Krista packed for him while waiting outside Mrs. Cross’s house in Telmont. After the visit, he finds a fake suicide note in his jacket pocket, written in his own handwriting, and soon begins to feel violently ill. That’s when he realises the cookies were poisoned and Krista was trying to frame him for all the murders she committed.

Krista’s Point of View and The Truth Uncovered

We start to understand everything once the story shifts to Krista’s point of view. Until now, she’s seemed like a sweet, supportive fiancée, quirky, into baking, and standing by Blake through his breakdown. But in her own chapters, we learn the truth: Krista is actually the real Whitney Cross.

She changed her name years ago to escape her dark past and has been hiding in plain sight. She’s cold, manipulative, and dangerous, and she’s been planning everything from the start. Renting out the room? Her idea. Letting “Whitney” (who is actually Amanda) move in? All part of her plan. Framing Blake? You guessed it, also her plan.

Krista reveals no remorse for any of it. Her goal? Revenge. She wanted Blake to suffer for cheating on her with Stacey and Amanda to pay for stealing her name and nearly exposing her. Every move she makes is calculated. From the poison-laced cookies to the fake suicide note in Blake’s handwriting, Krista’s chapters show just how far she’s willing to go. And she truly believes she’ll get away with it.

So… Who Is the Other Whitney Cross?

In Krista’s chapters, we finally learn how she figured out the truth about the tenant living in her house. It all starts when she’s out to dinner with Becky and hears someone call the waitress by name, Whitney Cross. But that was Krista’s real name right?

Suspicious, Krista does some digging. She reaches out to a tech-savvy friend who runs a check on the tenant’s driver’s license. And just like that, her instincts are confirmed: the ID is fake. The woman living in their house isn’t Whitney at all. Her real name is Amanda Lenhart, a former PhD student who fell into serious debt after borrowing money from loan sharks to cover her mother’s cancer treatment.

So, Amanda is lying about her name and hiding some very dangerous baggage. And Krista? She’s not about to let anyone steal her identity or mess with the life she’s built. At one point, Krista calmly lets Amanda know that she’s figured out her real name, but instead of confronting her aggressively, she plays it cool. She pretends to understand Amanda’s reasons, makes her feel safe, and even suggests they should move in together once she leaves Blake. Of course, it’s all part of her plan…

Krista Is the Real Danger

Krista isn’t just someone hurt by betrayal, she’s a master manipulator playing the long game. She’ll do whatever it takes to stay in control and protect the life she’s built, even if that means killing.

• Back in high school, her boyfriend Jordan Gallo died after mysteriously falling off a roof. It’s strongly implied Krista had something to do with it.
• The girl Jordan Gallo cheated on Whitney Cross with is never named in the book. However, it’s confirmed that six years after Jordan’s death, that girl was found murdered, all but confirming that Krista (the real Whitney) killed her out of revenge.
• She later kills Stacie the secretary, the woman Blake cheated with.
• Krista’s IT friend who helped her discover Amanda’s real identity; she killed him after he tried to stop her from going through with her plan and confessed he loved her.

Krista’s Motivations

Krista’s entire plan comes from a place of betrayal, and revenge.

What Krista Finds Out:

• Blake had an affair with Stacie at work.
• “Whitney Cross” is actually Amanda Lenhart, a former PhD student who changed her name to escape loan sharks.
• This double betrayal pushes Krista over the edge and sparks her carefully planned revenge.

How She Put Her Revenge Plan in Motion:

• She gets Blake fired: Krista anonymously contacts Blake’s boss, Wayne Vincent, claiming Blake sold company files. The lie works, Blake loses his job and reputation.
• She ensures Amanda becomes the tenant: Krista targets Amanda by listing the room where Amanda would see it. She hires acting students to pose as horrible tenants so Amanda looks like the best option.
• She plants fear through Quillizabeth: Krista hires a psychic, Quillizabeth, to deliver a chilling warning—Blake will stab Krista in their living room. The “vision” shakes them both.
• She gaslights Blake: Krista switches his detergent with one that contains limonene, knowing he’s allergic. As his skin reacts, she adds more strange events to make him think he’s losing it.
• She kills Mr Zimmerly.
• She poisons the cookies: Krista bakes his favourite snickerdoodles—but this time, laces them with a deadly toxin (tetrodotoxin).
• She kills Stacey.
• She frames him step-by-step: Krista writes a fake suicide note in Blake’s handwriting, confessing to murders. She plans to poison him and make it look like he killed Amanda and then himself.
• She kills Elijah.
• She plans to kill Amanda too: Her final goal is to eliminate Amanda and tie all the murders to Blake, making him the villain of the story.

Who is Elijah?

Elijah is Krista’s old friend and tech contact who helped her create the fake identity of “Krista Marshall” when she left behind her past as Whitney Cross. Despite being clearly infatuated with her, Elijah has always stayed in the background, until Krista needs his help again to investigate Amanda (the impostor tenant using Krista’s real name).

She visits Elijah one last time. She seduces him, something she sees as a favour, or a way to give him a final moment of happiness. After they sleep together, and while he lies in bed relaxed and satisfied, Krista murders him by slitting his throat. She does it quickly and cleanly, rationalising that Elijah knew too much and had become a liability.

She feels a little guilty for a moment, but quickly brushes it off, saying he “went out with a bang.” It just shows how far Krista is willing to go to stay in control and cover her tracks.

Blake Returns to NY

After being poisoned by Krista’s snickerdoodles, Blake realises what’s happening just in time. He throws up violently on the sidewalk, hoping to purge the toxin from his system before it fully kicks in. Krista had intended the poison to kill him slowly, expecting him to stay home and sleep it off.

While Krista returns to the brownstone expecting to find Blake unconscious or worse, she’s surprised to find Amanda instead, and no sign of Blake. Meanwhile, Blake, still feeling seriously ill, makes his way back to the house. That’s when everything comes to a head. He finds Krista and Amanda face to face. Things spiral fast: Krista stabs Blake, nearly killing him. But Amanda fights back and, in the end, stabs Krista in self-defence.

Blake tries to save Krista and confesses he still loves her, even after everything. Amanda calls 911, but Krista dies before help arrives.

Aftermath: Hospital and Reflection

Blake survives, barely. He spends a week in the hospital recovering from tetrodotoxin poisoning. Amanda visits him several times, helping him recover and even playing the role of caretaker. He’s still shaken, but he’s ready for a new start. He plans to sell the brownstone and move back to Ohio.

The house now holds too many bad memories. While it’s up for sale, Amanda (who was pretending to be Whitney Cross) stays behind. She agrees to look after things, cleaning, meeting agents, and helping with the sale, in exchange for staying there rent-free. It’s a practical deal. Even after all that happened, Blake and Amanda get close for a little while. They have a brief affair, but Blake still doesn’t know the real reason Amanda was there.

Epilogue and Amanda’s Real Motivations

In the epilogue, we finally hear Amanda’s side of the story, and it changes everything. Until now, Blake believed Amanda had saved him out of care, maybe even something close to affection. But the truth? Amanda had her own secret deal.

Amanda was hired by Frank Gallo, Jordan Gallo’s uncle. Jordan was Krista’s ex-boyfriend from high school, the one she drove to suicide. Frank wanted revenge. Amanda agreed to kill Krista in exchange for having her huge gambling debt cleared. It wasn’t about helping Blake or her mom with cancer. She killed Krista to save herself and take back control of her life.

In her final reflections, Amanda shows no guilt. She knows she fooled Blake completely and walks away feeling satisfied, even a little smug. Krista never saw it coming. And now Amanda walks out of the brownstone, free, debt paid, and not nearly as innocent as she looked.

As a huge fan of audiobooks, especially in crime and mystery, I’m always searching for my next listen and If you’ve been around here for a while, you know I have a 9-to-5 job with loads of solo time, which means I can plug in and dive into stories whenever I get the chance. Audiobook Scorecard of The Tenant by Freida McFadden

Now, I’m a picky listener, especially when it comes to audiobooks. Even if the author is fantastic, if the narrator’s voice doesn’t fit the story, I won’t be able to connect, and I’ll opt for the printed version instead. Also, it’s worth mentioning that strange sounds, like heavy breathing or inconsistent audio quality, can really pull me out of the experience and ruin the immersion.

So yeah, I take this stuff pretty seriously, maybe too seriously, haha. But when I’m listening to a story, I want to be fully in it. Audiobooks are a full experience for me, not just background noise.

Here’s my humble, yet very detailed list of what I believe an audiobook should offer.

My Thoughts on The Tenant by Freida McFadden (Spoiler Free)

As a Freida fan, I wanted so bad to love The Tenant, but it didn’t quite match other books magic. While the narrators did a solid job, the story just didn’t deliver the tension or momentum I usually expect from a Freida McFadden book. It felt more rushed, repetitive, and less gripping than her previous works.

Blake’s constant whining and repetitive inner monologues became tiresome, and several scenes felt either absurd or far too predictable. If you’ve read McFadden’s earlier books, especially The Housemaid, this one might come across as a less polished, lower-stakes version.

The characters felt too shallow and underdeveloped. I did like that Freida chose to write from a male point of view this time, but with less repetition and more depth, it could’ve been much stronger. You don’t really care about anyone, people come and go and in the end of the day you’re just curious to see what happens next because you know that the plot twist is coming!

And the twist? It didn’t land at all. I saw it coming, and by the time it happened, it felt too far-fetched to make any real impact. The motivations were so weak I was just like, “Wait… what?” Cue eye roll.

Even the epilogue was underwhelming. Honestly, it feels like Freida might be rushing her writing lately, focusing more on quantity than the quality that made The Housemaid such a standout.

That said, it’s still an easy read, short chapters, simple dialogue, and the kind of book you can finish in one sitting. This is something I genuinely appreciate about Freida’s style. Sometimes you just want something light, without overly complicated language or long, drawn-out chapters. Despite the repetitive structure, the story still flows.
